Bhutanese Cooking and Momo Making
Description:
Bhutan is an ancient kingdom secluded high in the Himalayas with unique customs and people with deeply held beliefs. My sister-in-law taught here and later she then taught me the dishes she loved. At the time there were no Bhutanese cookbooks and I am not aware of any today! We also had Tshewang Dendup combined with Jamie's experience to guide us. I think we did quite well! Most of what is served at this dinner would be the feast we had when our kids were little and they would visit here in Nipissing village. My kids who are now young adults continue to make many of these dishes today. Bhutan is often in the news for their practice of Gross National Happiness!

What does the food taste like? Bhutanese food is unique but also has some similarities to north Indian, Tibetan and Chinese cuisines. Recipes are moderately spicy but modified for the Western palate and ingredients.

Momos (Cheese Dumplings),
Aize (tomato chile condiment),

Kewa Datshi (traditional dish of potatoes and cheese),

Beef Shoem (Beef Butter Curry with Mushrooms),
Eue Chum (Bhutanese Red Rice),
Kulfi (Homemade Ice-cream)
Home-grown Himalayan Blackberries
Spiced Tea

It is a lot of fun to make momos and I don't know anyone that doesn't love them. They are tasty stuffed cheese dumplings served as an appetizer or light meal and fun to make around the table with a group and kids.
